Ensuring that physical infrastructure is accessible to all is a critical step toward creating an inclusive society. To support this goal, the Technical Standards for Physical Infrastructure for People with Disabilities have been developed and are now available through NEP’s Policy Bank.
These standards apply to the construction and modification of public physical infrastructure, including buildings and spaces such as roads, sidewalks, parks, railway stations, airports, administrative buildings, schools, hospitals, hotels, and various infrastructure projects across Cambodia. They are also relevant to certain private buildings that serve the public. The overarching objective is to ensure that people with all types of disabilities can access and move through these spaces easily, independently, and safely.
The document outlines practical requirements for inclusive design, helping architects, engineers, construction firms, government agencies, and educational institutions align their infrastructure projects with universal accessibility principles. This includes features such as ramps, tactile surfaces, accessible signage, and barrier-free entry points, which are essential for removing the physical barriers that often exclude people with disabilities from public life.
By implementing these standards, Cambodia takes a significant step toward fulfilling its commitments to the rights of persons with disabilities, improving their participation in education, employment, healthcare, and community life.
