As digital technology continues to advance, so too do the risks associated with its use—particularly for children and young people. With increased internet connectivity and widespread access to digital devices, new forms of online child exploitation have emerged globally, including in Cambodia. While digital platforms offer numerous social and economic benefits, they also expose users—especially children—to harmful content and potential abuse, particularly through social media and other online interactions.
In response to these growing concerns, a new resource titled A Guide to Teaching Children About Online Safety has been uploaded to NEP’s Policy Bank. This guide aims to support teachers, school staff, parents, and community stakeholders in recognizing and addressing the risks children face in digital environments. It provides practical instructional materials and strategies to help children develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to navigate the online world safely.
The guide addresses key issues such as exposure to child sexual abuse materials, online grooming, and other forms of exploitation that have become increasingly accessible through digital platforms. It underscores the importance of preventive education and equips adults with tools to protect children by fostering digital literacy, responsible internet use, and open communication about online risks.
As children remain among the most vulnerable groups in the digital age, this guide serves as an essential resource for educators and caregivers to create safer online experiences and promote child protection in all learning environments.
