KIX EMAP Webinar 21: Exploring Climate Change and Education in Southeast Asia and the Pacific

The KIX EMAP Hub invites policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to join Webinar 21, an insightful online event addressing the intersection of climate change and education in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. This timely discussion will take place on Wednesday, 27 November 2024, and will be conducted in English.

Climate change, environmental degradation, and climate shocks continue to disrupt education systems globally, with Southeast Asia and the Pacific facing some of the most severe impacts. Nearly half of the world’s children—around 1 billion—live in countries at extreme risk of climate impacts, and in East Asia and the Pacific, 41% of children experience five or more overlapping climate and environmental stresses, compared to a global average of 14%.

These challenges threaten children’s well-being, their ability to attend school, and the resilience of education systems. Schools, teachers, and communities are bearing the brunt of extreme weather events, with infrastructure damage and resource constraints exacerbating the situation.

Webinar 21 aims to spotlight the integration of climate change into education policy and planning across the region, emphasizing adaptation and mitigation measures to ensure that children continue learning despite climate challenges. It will highlight the dual role of education: enabling resilient systems and empowering communities to drive climate action for sustainable futures.

Participants will hear from policymakers, education administrators, civil society, and multilateral organizations as they share perspectives on mainstreaming climate change in education. The session will explore key issues, opportunities, and country experiences, addressing inherent tensions in current approaches and presenting innovative alternatives.
