The Education 2030 Framework for Action calls for UNESCO, in consultation with the SDG4 High-Level Steering Committee (HLSC), to convene periodic Global Education Meetings (GEM) to review progress and challenges related to SDG4. The 2024 edition of this crucial gathering will take place from October 31 to November 1 in Fortaleza, Brazil. The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) movement has been actively involved in preparations, as shared during the recent International Events webinar held on September 4.
With just six years remaining until 2030, GEM 2024 comes at a pivotal time for addressing the priorities necessary to meet the SDG4 targets. The meeting will bring together Ministers of Education and other key sectors, alongside representatives from UN bodies, students, teachers, and civil society organizations. Taking place alongside the G20 Education Ministers’ Meeting, GEM 2024 will tackle critical topics such as equity and inclusion in education, education financing, the use of digital technology, the climate crisis, and gender equality.
GCE has played a vital role in shaping the event, particularly through its participation in the Collective Consultation of NGOs for Education 2030 (CCNGO) Coordination Group and representation in the HLSC. GCE expresses deep gratitude to its representatives who have been on the frontlines, working tirelessly to elevate civil society voices. Their efforts culminated in the creation of a Civil Society input document, consolidating contributions from all CCNGO regions and constituencies. GCE members have also actively participated in UNESCO’s regional consultations, shaping regional contributions to GEM 2024.
All these inputs are available on the GEM 2024 webpage, and GCE hopes that these efforts will be reflected in the meeting’s outcome document, the Fortaleza Declaration. A draft of this declaration is currently under review by the HLSC Sherpa representatives.
