The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) has been closely monitoring the organization of the upcoming Summit of the Future (SOFT) and the UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, where some of our members will participate. Additionally, both the GCE Secretariat and numerous GCE members have presented impactful suggestions, comments, and direct requests for inclusion in the Pact for the Future, which serves as the primary political outcome of these events.
However, it is concerning that despite the broad scope of the Summit of the Future and the initial draft of the Pact for the Future, crucial aspects of the human right to education and lifelong learning have been marginalized. Education is notably absent from the central chapters of the SOFT.
In response to this, the GCE Board has decided to advocate for an Open Letter to Global Leaders, urging them to engage with the Co-Facilitators of the Summit, H.E. Neville M. Gertze, Permanent Representative of Namibia to the UN, and H.E. Antje Leendertse, Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN. We call upon them to prioritize educational considerations in all sessions of the Summit of the Future and to ensure their substantive inclusion in both the Pact for the Future and the Declaration on Future Generations.
