Increasing the understanding of rights to education for women and girls with disabilities

Ms. Dim Sophea is a woman with disability and the  lead from Battambang who has been working on a project to increase the understanding of rights to education for women and girls with disabilities in the Chamkarsomrong district.

Ms. Dim Sophea is a person with speech difficulty.  Based on her activity plan plan, the meeting with the principal of school and teachers was conducted at Watleab primary school, to enhance an understanding about disability inclusion to them and introduced the project’s activities especially sought for collaboration. During the meeting, the principal of the school reported the statistics of teachers and students in her school and she’s happy to collaborate in the area of the project. “Our school currently has students with disabilities studying and our teachers need more capacity building on how to teach children with disabilities, especially students with intellectual disabilities” said by the school principal. Sophea will be working more with parents and authorities in the community to promote education for all and to also raise awareness on disabilities inclusion. Ms. Sophea difficulties with speech did not stop her from being a helpful, gentle, patient, and friendly assistant to those around her.The project led by Ms. Sophea had four main activities that were to be implemented in the Chamkarsomrong district. One of the first steps in the project was to have a meeting with the principal of Watleab primary school and teachers to enhance their understanding of disability inclusion and introduce them to the project’s activities. The meeting was also aimed at seeking their collaboration in the project implementation. Teachers highlighted the need for capacity building for teachers on how to teach children with disabilities, especially those with intellectual disabilities.

Ms. Sophea took the feedback seriously and decided to work more with parents and authorities in the community to promote education for all and raise awareness on disability inclusion. Despite her own speech difficulty, Ms. Sophea has been able to communicate effectively with the stakeholders of this project. Her helpful, gentle, patient, and friendly nature has helped her build strong relationships with people in the community, which has enabled her to carry out this project effectively.

Through the implementation of the project, Ms. Sophea hopes to empower women and girls with disabilities in the community to access education and equal opportunities. This project will not only improve the lives of women with disabilities but also contribute to an inclusive society that values and respects diversity.
