Open E-books and E-texts for Unreached Children to Learn Big!

Marking the 10 anniversary of the multi-language platform “LearnBig” which was developed as part of UNESCO Bangkok’s initiative “Mobile Literacy for Out-of-School Children”. The project aims to enhance the basic literacy and numeracy skills of over 5,500 migrant, ethnic minority, stateless and marginalized children along the Thai-Myanmar border, harnessing the use of ICT and mobile learning.

Not surprisingly – given this lack of resources and political commitment – the adult literacy programmes that do run tend to be poor quality, relying on untrained and semi-volunteer teachers who struggle to keep up attendance night after night. There are exceptions: some NGO and government programmes have demonstrated how properly resourced adult education can help facilitate real change within rural communities.
